A 38-year-old man has been sentenced by Nivelles district court to one year in prison and a fine of 400 euros, both suspended, for striking and threatening his partner during an argument linked to alcohol.

A man in his forties has received a sentence of twelve months suspended and placed on probation, along with a financial penalty of 400 euros, also suspended. Nivelles court reached this decision against a resident of Incourt, in Walloon Brabant, found guilty of violence towards his partner.
The assault dates back to 17 April 2026. For four years, the couple have shared the same home. Their relationship has been regularly disrupted by the defendant's alcohol abuse. A week before the incident, the judicial supervision officer for Thibaut had already reported the individual's difficulties in respecting his conditional release obligations in a previous case.
The conflict began when the victim refused to give him the keys to the family vehicle, believing his state of intoxication was incompatible with driving. The following morning, she went to the police station to file a complaint. She claims to have been struck. According to her account, the evening before, her partner had attempted to grab her by the throat, torn down curtains, snatched a telephone from her hands, hurled insults and wielded a kitchen utensil while threatening her. The man admitted to striking a blow, telling police officers: "I hit her", according to La Dernière Heure.
During the court hearing on 10 June, the defendant admitted his difficulties with drink. He nonetheless portrayed his partner as a manipulator capable of provoking him. This argument did not justify the threats made, one of which was reported to the magistrates: "Do you want me to stab you like last time?"
The public prosecutor's representative highlighted the dangerous nature of the defendant's behaviour. His partner had developed a strategy of evacuating the home with her three children whenever she perceived signs of escalation. The prosecution sought a sentence of one year imprisonment without suspension.
The defence counsel argued for a sentence of community work or unsupervised probation, conditioned on total abstinence from alcoholic beverages. The judges ultimately handed down a suspended sentence, as reported by La Dernière Heure.
