Belgian authorities have arrested in Mons a Canadian trainee of Chinese origin working at SHAPE, suspected of spying for a third country and of belonging to a criminal group.

On Friday, Belgian law enforcement placed in detention a young woman undertaking a traineeship at the headquarters of the Allied Forces in Europe (SHAPE), located in Mons. The operation followed suspicions of espionage activities for the benefit of a foreign nation, as well as links to a criminal group, according to an announcement from the Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office issued on Saturday, reported by G4Media.ro.
Of Chinese origin and holding a Canadian passport, the woman in question had been reported by the security teams of the military command of the Atlantic Alliance. On the day before her arrest, search warrants were executed at both her private residence and her workplace within the organisation.
At this stage, the Public Prosecutor's Office has not communicated further details concerning the charges against the person in question, nor identified the country suspected of gathering intelligence.
