A Charleroi resident has received a sentence of five years imprisonment for raping his neighbour, a woman with a disability. The tribunal delivered its verdict on Wednesday, whilst the accused was absent and could not be found.
The events date back to 17 May 2023. It was on that day that the victim alerted the police. She told them she had received a message from her neighbour Antoine, then went to his home. There, the man forced her into sexual intercourse. After leaving the premises, the woman provided investigators with a precise description of the room where the assault had taken place. She notably mentioned a mattress placed directly on the floor.
Police were able to verify that this detail corresponded exactly to the interior of Antoine's flat. After the incident, he fled and remained at large for two years. He was eventually arrested and questioned. To the officers, he claimed it was a consensual relationship. This version was not accepted by the prosecution.
On Wednesday, the public prosecutor obtained the sentence it had requested: five years imprisonment. Furthermore, an immediate arrest warrant was issued. As soon as Antoine is spotted by a police unit, he will be immediately taken into custody.
