On 30 July, a 35-year-old man named Dany attempted to leave the Spar shop in Beaumont with two pairs of headphones and three pots of cream hidden in his pockets, representing total damages of more than 180 euros. The manager attempted to intercept him, according to DHnet, which triggered a violent altercation.
Substitute prosecutor Macq detailed the facts at the hearing based on CCTV footage. "We can see the defendant attempting to leave the shop and the manager trying to intervene. The latter is violently shoved by the defendant and both men fall to the ground. The manager's partner also tries to help her partner," she explained.
The couple suffered eight days' loss of working capacity as a result of the violence. Before the judge, Dany did not contest how the facts unfolded, but highlighted the manager's gesture, "who grabbed" him by the neck.
The case is aggravated by a serious criminal record: Dany has a total of seventeen previous convictions, including several for theft. He is in a situation of recidivism in relation to a sentence handed down in April 2024 to fifteen months' imprisonment with probation for similar offences.
Substitute prosecutor Macq requested a sentence of twelve months' imprisonment, whilst leaving it to the judge to decide whether or not to give the defendant another chance. The defence is pleading for a probation sentence. A verdict is expected in two weeks.
