A 25-year-old resident of Zonhoven is standing trial at the correctional court in Hasselt for a violent robbery and theft from a company vehicle. The young man did not appear at his trial, nor was there a lawyer present to defend him.
On 11 November 2023, he and an accomplice called a friend, claiming their car was stuck in mud. When the victim arrived at the location, the story proved to be a lie. Instead of receiving help, he was beaten and forced to hand over his money and mobile phone. The duo subsequently called out at a residence that the victim had attempted to commit theft.
The co-defendant met the conditions of a payment plan and other mediation measures, which meant he no longer had to appear before the court. The Zonhoven man ignored all imposed obligations. Moreover, he had to answer for a theft from his employer, which he committed because his wages had not yet been paid.
The prosecution requested 20 months imprisonment for the violent robbery and an additional year for the theft from his employer. According to the prosecutor, the accused had already been given multiple chances, but never took any of them. This report is based on Het Belang van Limburg.
