Iliyan Filipov, one of Bulgaria's most prominent businessmen in the transport sector, was killed by a gunshot to the head in the early hours of Wednesday morning in the city of Plovdiv, according to reports citing BNR News.
Police received a call around 1:00 a.m. regarding a man who had been shot in a neighbourhood in Plovdiv. Filipov, 53 years old, was found dead at the scene. The attack took place on a property that belonged to him.
Following the murder, authorities increased surveillance at the main entrances and exits to Plovdiv. A special investigative team was established to investigate the case.
Plovdiv district prosecutor Vanya Hristeva stated on Wednesday during a briefing that it was too early to establish a primary hypothesis. "We are actively working on all possible versions," she said. Bulgarian authorities have not yet announced a possible motive for the murder.
Filipov was the founder of the transport company PIMK, established in 2000. The group subsequently expanded into areas such as construction and railway transport. In 2020, companies in the group reported combined revenues of over 312 million leva and employed over 1,500 people.
In recent years, Filipov's name was also connected to football: he ran Botev Plovdiv football club and played an important role in financing it. His company was also involved in the reconstruction of the "Hristo Botev" stadium in Plovdiv, a contract signed in 2020, and Filipov represented the winning consortium for the project.
Botev Plovdiv issued a message of condolences on Wednesday, recalling Filipov's contribution to saving the club in the summer of 2025 and to completing work on the stadium.
