Syrian with humanitarian status stabs two outside National Palace of Culture, fled after attack

A 23-year-old Syrian is accused of attacking three youths outside the National Palace of Culture in Sofia, according to Novinite.com, citing the Sofia District Prosecutor's Office. The incident occurred on 16 October.

Around 21:00 on Friday, the suspect, identified by the initials M.M., first struck a young man in the forehead with his head in the park in front of the National Palace of Culture, causing him a light injury. He then attacked and stabbed two other men — aged 18 and 19 — with a knife.

Two emergency medical service crews were sent to the scene. One of the injured was taken to Pirogov Hospital, and the other to the General Military Clinical Hospital Complex. Pirogov Hospital reported that the younger injured person sustained multiple injuries affecting various parts of the body and underwent emergency surgery.

The Prosecutor's Office qualified the attacks as committed from hooliganism motives, in a public place and with recklessness. The Syrian citizen, living in Bulgaria with humanitarian status, fled after the incident and went into hiding.

He was detained the following day by officers from the Department for Combating Criminal Offences at the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Plovdiv. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated for crimes punishable by imprisonment.

The suspect has a prior criminal history and at the time of the attack was on probation from a previous sentence. He has been detained for a period of up to 72 hours, as the authorities consider him a potential flight risk and believe he may commit further offences.

The Sofia District Prosecutor's Office intends to request from the Sofia District Court a permanent preventive measure — detention in custody.
