According to the Sofia City Prosecutor's Office, the suspect, identified by the initials Y.G., has been placed in custody for a period of up to 72 hours. He is accused of stabbing his friend with multiple injuries to the neck and back.
Residents reported the incident early in the morning
The case came to light around 7 a.m. on Monday morning, after residents of the apartment building alerted police to the man's behaviour. According to witnesses, the 24- or 25-year-old Ukrainian was standing in front of the building, shouting and appearing to be in an inadequate state.
The man had difficulties entering the building and eventually broke the glass of the entrance door, after which he went up to the apartment. Before this, he allegedly damaged two parked cars on the street, and a paving stone was found in one of them.
Police officers who arrived found the man near the damaged cars and detained him. Upon searching the apartment with the open door, they found the woman's body inside.
Investigation continues, motive not confirmed
The exact circumstances surrounding the murder continue to be investigated. Authorities have not officially confirmed a motive, although a domestic conflict is being considered as the leading theory, according to information from the investigation.
Neighbours stated that the couple generally lived quietly and did not cause problems in the block before the incident. Some of them said they had seen them in an intoxicated state and suspected the man of using drugs. These claims have not been officially confirmed.
One of the neighbours described the man's behaviour immediately before the incident. "In my opinion, he was clearly under the influence of drugs and she did not want to let him inside, because he had been walking around for a long time," she said, emphasising that his behaviour seemed abnormal.
Another neighbour shared that he had seen the man the previous day and he appeared to be talking to himself. Residents stated that they had not witnessed any previous arguments between the two and knew almost nothing about their way of life.
Unofficial reports of flags found
Media publications citing unofficial sources report that Ukrainian flags with Nazi symbols were found in the apartment. These claims have not been confirmed in official statements by police or the prosecutor's office.
Preventive measure expected to be imposed
The Sofia City Prosecutor's Office has ordered that the detained man remain in custody for a period of up to 72 hours and is preparing a request to Sofia City Court for the imposition of a preventive measure.
Later, Sofia City Court ordered the 25-year-old Ukrainian Yaroslav Gulyatkin to remain in detention on suspicion of the murder of his 18-year-old Japanese friend in the Buxton district.
The investigation continues as authorities work to clarify the full circumstances surrounding the woman's death, the events preceding it, and the motive for the alleged murder.
