Shooting in Santa Rosita neighbourhood: 20-year-old survives attack by hooded gunmen on motorcycle
A 20-year-old survived an armed attack at his home in the Santa Rosita neighbourhood in San Ignacio de Velasco, Santa Cruz. According to El Deber, two hooded men arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire when the victim was standing on the pavement in front of his house.
Reacting quickly, the young man managed to take shelter inside the building. The attackers entered the premises and fired at the walls before fleeing. No injuries were reported.
The prosecutor of San Ignacio de Velasco, Jorge Torrez, confirmed to ED24 Noticias that according to the preliminary report, the victim did not suffer injuries. "Thanks to his immediate reaction, he took shelter in his home and saved himself," Torrez said.
Investigators found and collected three 9-millimetre ammunition shell casings at the scene, which will be incorporated into the investigation proceedings.
Torrez indicated that once the young man's physical safety was assured, plans were in place to take a statement from him and transfer him to the facilities of the Special Force to Combat Crime (Felcc). The objective is to determine whether he had received prior threats or whether there is any background information that could guide the investigation into the motive for the attack.
At the time of the prosecutor's statement, there was no confirmed information about the identity or whereabouts of the two suspects. The Police are checking whether there are security cameras in the surrounding area that would allow them to reconstruct the attackers' route, identify the characteristics of the motorcycle, and obtain images useful for their identification. The attack generated alarm among the neighbourhood residents due to the gunshots and the visible bullet impacts on the facade of the home.
San Ignacio accumulates a series of violent incidents
The incident comes after a series of armed attacks that left four people dead in the same municipality during September, within a span of just over 24 hours.
On 14 September, two young men identified as Julio and Israel were shot dead in a home in the San Martín neighbourhood. According to initial reports, both were conducting a live broadcast to sell clothing and other items when they were attacked.
These deaths were added to those of Rodrigo Oliveira Zeballos and Gabriel Posiabo Fernández, 22 years old, recorded in the early morning of the previous Sunday under also violent circumstances. The succession of crimes prompted local authorities to analyse security measures.
Investigators will have to establish whether the attack on the young man in the Santa Rosita neighbourhood is in response to a particular conflict or whether it is related to the violence previously recorded in the region. For now, no link between this incident and the previous ones has been confirmed.
