Bolivia removes its detained attorney general and appoints Urioste as interim head

According to albertonews.com, Bolivia's Legislative Assembly permanently suspended attorney general Roger Mariaca, detained and accused of alleged protection of drug trafficking, and appointed lawyer José Armando Urioste as interim head of the Public Ministry.

The session convened near midnight on Friday. The Legislature first removed Mariaca, a measure made possible following approval—hours earlier—of a reform to the Organic Law of the Public Ministry. The modification incorporated a mechanism of "permanent suspension" of the attorney general when "formally charged and/or subject to a personal precautionary measure for offences punishable" by prison sentences.

After several hours of deliberation and approximately five votes among three candidates proposed by forces with parliamentary representation, Urioste was elected interim attorney general "with more than two-thirds," Senate president Diego Ávila declared to media.
