Bolivia's Public Prosecutor's Office announced on Thursday, 7 May 2026, the detention of four people allegedly linked to the shooting death of Víctor Hugo Claure, dean of the Agrarian Environmental Court, according to a report by dw.com.
"We have four people arrested, they will be placed at the disposal of the judge, because one of them has direct involvement in the magistrate's death; the others have secondary participation," the prosecutor handling the case, Yolanda Aguilera, told media outlets.
Aguilera clarified that one of the detainees faces greater responsibility in the matter, and therefore preventive detention will be sought for the alleged crimes of complicity in murder and unlawful possession of firearms. The four are also being investigated by an anti-narcotics unit, although the prosecutor clarified that to date the "material perpetrators" of the crime have not been identified.
The investigation has been declared under seal to protect the identity and safety of witnesses, Aguilera indicated.
The crime took place a week ago: Claure was travelling in a vehicle through the city of Santa Cruz when he was intercepted by men on motorcycles, one of whom shot him repeatedly. Following the incident, the Police activated "security capsules" to protect another 13 senior magistrates in that city, and the Public Prosecutor's Office formed an investigation commission.
On Tuesday, magistrates from the Supreme Court of Justice, the Agrarian Environmental Court and the Magistracy Council called on the government of Rodrigo Paz for permanent security and protection measures for themselves and their families, given the "extreme seriousness" of the event.
The Police suspect that Claure's murder is related to his decisions regarding land matters.
