Preventive detention for former La Paz Prosecutor's Office official in Mariaca case

The former operations coordinator for the La Paz Departmental Prosecutor's Office, identified as Israel Armando R. T., was remanded with preventive detention for six months to San Pedro prison in the department of Oruro. According to El Deber, the measure was ordered by the Fifth Criminal Investigation Court for Anti-Corruption and Violence Against Women in La Paz.

The acting Attorney General of the State, José Armando Urioste Viera, communicated the judicial decision, which is part of investigations into the Public Ministry and former Attorney General Róger Mariaca.

The detention was ordered following the presentation of evidence by a commission of prosecutors which, according to the Public Ministry, supports the probability of the former official's involvement in the alleged crimes of trafficking in controlled substances and criminal organisation. The Prosecutor's Office also argued the existence of procedural risks.

The investigations will continue with the analysis of evidence gathered to establish the link between the accused and the facts under investigation. The proceedings must be conducted under the principle of presumption of innocence and with respect for due process.

Broader investigation

The detention of Israel Armando R. T. is part of a wider investigation into alleged irregularities within the Public Ministry, which involves former Attorney General Róger Mariaca. The case is developing in a context of accusations of alleged protection of drug trafficking and acts of corruption attributed to former authorities of the institution.
