Former La Paz prosecuting co-ordinator detained for alleged links to Mariaca criminal network

Former La Paz prosecuting co-ordinator Armando Rojas Toledo was arrested on Tuesday night at his home, accused of criminal organisation and illicit drug trafficking in the form of concealment, according to El Deber. Authorities link him to the network of former attorney general Róger Mariaca, who was also detained in previous days.

The arrest took place around 20:30 hours. Rojas was immediately transferred to cells of the Special Anti-Narcotics Force (Felcn), the institution competent given the type of offences imputed to him.

As he was removed from his home by police officers, the former prosecutor limited himself to pronouncing a brief statement: "I was only an operational co-ordinator".

Hours before the detention, La Paz's new departmental prosecutor, Tania Alfaro, had assured that Rojas was on holiday and that there was no arrest warrant against him. "Señor Rojas, I understand that as of now he is enjoying holidays, I imagine he will soon be resuming his duties," Alfaro declared when asked about his procedural situation.

Once in custody, Rojas exercised his right to remain silent and refrained from declaring before his former colleagues, so he was directly charged. The provisional hearing to determine his legal situation could take place on Wednesday, although a definitive date has not yet been set.
