The Police established 24-hour permanent custody for former prosecutor general of the State Róger Mariaca at the maximum-security prison in Cantumarca, in Potosí. According to reporting by El Deber, agents assigned to his surveillance will be replaced every month to prevent any links of familiarity with the inmate.

Colonel Franklin Róger Villazón, departmental commander of the Potosí Police, explained that the measure responds to the high profile of the case and Mariaca's status as former prosecutor general. "It has been provided that this person will have specific security during the 24 hours," Villazón stated.

The shift system operates on two levels: different groups relieve one another every day, but additionally those same groups are replaced by completely new custodians every three to four weeks. "However, these groups will be changed by other custodians every three to four weeks to prevent any degree of relationship with the inmate," the commander detailed.

The police authority clarified that so far there are no formal reports of threats against the life or physical integrity of the former official. Despite this, the institution decided to maintain permanent surveillance to guarantee his security during his stay in the facility.

Two cases keep him in preventive detention

Mariaca is at Cantumarca following a second six-month preventive detention order, this time within the framework of an investigation for alleged money laundering. The case originates from the discovery of Bs 3,532,100 and $us 10,000 in an ambulance that entered the condominium where his residence is located in Santa Cruz.

The first preventive detention was ordered within an investigation for alleged criminal organisation and trafficking in controlled substances.

In the second case, four other people linked to the ambulance are also involved. The Public Prosecutor seeks to determine the origin and destination of the money, as well as the circumstances in which the funds were introduced to and withdrawn from the property.

While both investigations proceed, Mariaca will remain in Cantumarca under permanent police surveillance and with custodians who, in accordance with the decision of the Potosí Police, will be rotated monthly.
