Vice-minister: Del Castillo prefers to hide in Bolivia rather than risk going abroad

According to opinion.com.bo, Peter Maldonado, vice-minister of Interior Affairs, stated on Thursday that former government minister Eduardo Del Castillo remains in hiding in Bolivian territory. In his view, the reason is that crossing the border would put him at risk of being detained by international bodies.

"It would not be reasonable for Eduardo Del Castillo to leave the country and go abroad, because it would be much easier for some international body to catch him and capture him, starting with the DEA. I believe he is here hidden somewhere," Maldonado declared on ERBOL's morning programme La Mañana en Directo.

Del Castillo is a fugitive following the discovery of alleged links with Uruguayan drug trafficker Sebastián Marset. A recording in which Marset is involved would implicate him in a supposed protection structure that allegedly received payments.

Maldonado added that, according to his suspicions, the accounts placing the former minister in Peru would have been spread by Del Castillo himself with the aim of diverting attention from the investigations against him.

The vice-minister also argued that Del Castillo, Marset and former prosecutor Roger Mariaca would have formed a criminal organisation that guaranteed impunity for the Uruguayan drug trafficker to operate freely.
