Bolivia's Attorney General faces six months of provisional imprisonment for drug trafficking
Bolivia's Public Prosecutor's Office requested on Friday six months of provisional imprisonment for Attorney General Roger Mariaca and judges Alberto Zeballos and Martín Irusta, arrested this week on charges of drug trafficking, according to infobae.com.
The Public Ministry formally charged the three prosecutors and police officer Rubén Aparicio with the alleged offences of drug trafficking and criminal organisation. The authorities requested that the accused remain in custody in the San Pedro and Patacamaya prisons in La Paz.
Vice Minister of Government Marco Antonio Oviedo made the announcement during a parliamentary session, following the arrest of the four defendants and ten other people connected to the case.
On the same Friday, the prosecutor for the La Paz department, Luis Carlos Torrez, submitted his resignation from the position after police raided the Prosecutor's Office, which remains cordoned off.
The case is developing in a context in which the United States has focused its attention on Mariaca and other high-ranking and former Bolivian officials, to whom it has banned entry to the country and applied sanctions. The State Department has accused Mariaca of "abusing his public position to solicit and accept bribes to facilitate drug trafficking and help violent criminals evade justice".
