A two-year-old girl is fighting for her life in an intensive care unit in Cochabamba after her stepmother subjected her to a brutal beating that caused extremely serious injuries, according to Bolivian media outlet El Deber.
The child was rushed to Manuel Ascencio Villarroel Children's Hospital, where the medical team had to perform emergency cranial surgery. The girl presented with brain damage from trauma, internal bleeding, a broken arm bone, second-degree burn wounds on her skin and multiple bruises.
Alerted to the situation, law enforcement opened an investigation. During the course of the inquiry, the father's live-in partner—a 20-year-old woman—admitted that she had struck her partner's daughter. The child's father was also arrested.
A control judge imposed precautionary measures on both. The man was ordered to preventative detention at San Pedro de Cochabamba prison. The woman, having been found to be five months pregnant, received house arrest.
Both face charges of domestic violence and injuries of varying severity. Medical expert reports determined that the victim would be unable to work for seventy days for medical-legal purposes. Her condition remains delicate.
