A 32-year-old mother poisoned her two children with rat poison in Villazón, Potosí. All three survived and the Public Prosecutor's Office is investigating attempted infanticide.
Mother arrested after poisoning her children in Villazón
A 32-year-old woman was arrested in Potosí after poisoning her 9-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son with a toxic substance, reportedly rat poison. According to El Deber, the incident occurred on the afternoon of 24 September at a home in Villazón.
After administering the poison to the minors, the woman—identified as Liliana A. S.—also ingested the substance and took her children to the vicinity of the river in the Lampaya community. From there she called her mother, told her what had happened and requested help.
The children's grandmother went to the location and alerted the authorities. All three were evacuated to a medical centre, where they received gastric lavage. The 3-year-old boy was the most seriously affected and remains under medical observation; the mother and 9-year-old girl are out of danger.
The departmental prosecutor of Potosí, René Cáceres Juchani, confirmed that the case is being investigated as attempted infanticide. "We are carrying out all necessary steps to clarify this incident and establish what happened. Our priority is to protect the minors and ensure that the investigation develops with objectivity, responsibility and respect for their rights," Cáceres stated.
The prosecutor noted that evidence has already been gathered that will be evaluated during the investigative process. According to the preliminary report, Liliana A. S. reportedly stated that she was going through a moment of desperation due to debts and economic difficulties in supporting her family. This version will be evaluated as part of the fiscal investigation.
Police confirmed that all three individuals are out of danger while investigations continue.
