Couple arrested confesses to strangulation of app-based driver in São Carlos
A 36-year-old man and a 33-year-old woman were detained on Friday morning (18th) in Itirapina (SP), approximately 40 kilometres from São Carlos, on suspicion of killing app-based driver Edite Alves Bomfim, 50 years old. According to g1.globo.com, the couple confessed to the crime shortly after their arrest.
"Right away they took responsibility and said it was them who committed the crime. The motivation was that the young man, a drug user, in order to raise money to buy this drug, ended up committing the crime. He said that he strangled her," said PM Vinícius Matos in an interview with EPTV, an affiliate of TV Globo.
Body found on rural road
Edite's body was found on the evening of Wednesday (16th) on Estrada do Lobo, a rural road linking the Varjão neighbourhood to the Água Vermelha district. A passer-by who was in the area spotted the body and alerted the police.
The victim had a shoelace around her neck, tyre marks in the abdominal region and injuries to the scalp. A strand of hair was found near the body. The Military Police also identified vehicle tracks on the dirt road.
How the crime would have occurred
According to the PM, the suspect reported having requested a ride through the app and strangled Edite during the journey. He also admitted to stealing money and a mobile phone from the driver.
Edite's car was found on the evening of Thursday (17th) in Jardim Ipanema, in São Carlos. Security cameras recorded the moment when two people abandoned the vehicle on Rua Vereador Lucas Perroni Junior at around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday morning.
A resident became suspicious of the car parked throughout the day, checked the camera footage and called the police. The doors were unlocked and there was no record of theft or robbery associated with the number plate.
Evidence inside the vehicle
During the inspection, officers found blood stains and hair strands inside the car. The Scientific Police carried out a forensic examination and confirmed that the vehicle belonged to the victim. The car was seized and sent to the municipal parking lot to continue the investigation.
Arrest in flagrante delicto following tip-off
The Military Police arrested the couple after receiving a tip with information about the identity and address of the suspects. They were at the house of relatives in Jardim Nova Itirapina and, according to the PM, had their bags packed to leave the city.
The couple was taken to the Itirapina Police Station. The police reported that the man has a criminal history for threats, theft, robbery and handling stolen goods. The woman has a criminal record for possession of drugs for personal consumption.
