CNJ operation targets office of judge cited in investigation into sugarcane sector precatórios
According to agenciabrasil.ebc.com.br, the National Council of Justice (CNJ) conducted searches on Wednesday (24) at the office of judge Newton Ramos, of the Regional Federal Court of the 1st Region (TRF1), based in Brasília. The operation was ordered by the national justice ombudsman, Benedito Gonçalves, and executed by the Federal Police (PF).
Newton Ramos became a target of the CNJ after being cited in conversations found on the mobile phone of former banker Daniel Vorcaro. The messages indicate that Vorcaro's advisers referred to lawyer Camilla Ramos — the judge's wife and partner at the law firm Queiroga, Vieira, Queiroz and Ramos — and to the magistrate himself as members of the so-called "Turma do KN", an expression used in reference to minister Nunes Marques, of the Federal Supreme Court (STF).
The operation took place one day after the CNJ determined the cancellation of precatórios from sugarcane sector mills that had negotiated their credits with Banco Master. The securities total R$ 4.7 billion. The decision was motivated by action from the Attorney General's Office (AGU), which challenged orders from TRF1 for the deposit of amounts relating to 16 precatórios in a judicial account, before the cases became final and unappealable.
The case became public following a report by Portal Metrópoles revealing the existence of a contract worth R$ 427 million between Banco Master and the law firm of Camilla Ramos, to be paid in the event of success in the cases linked to the sugarcane sector.
In a statement, Newton Ramos stated that he remains in office and described the CNJ's disciplinary procedure as "natural and regular". The law firm Queiroga, Vieira, Queiroz and Ramos confirmed the previous day that it has a formal contract with Master to work on the precatórios cases, but denied having received any payment "as a professional fee or success fee".
Minister Nunes Marques stated that he never exchanged messages with Vorcaro and that he did not authorise anyone to speak on his behalf.
