A 44-year-old domestic worker was arrested in flagrante on Wednesday afternoon (23rd) in the flat of a North American police officer located on Avenida Rei Alberto I, in Ponta da Praia, Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. According to information obtained by g1.globo.com from the Civil Police, the objects found in the woman's handbag — jewellery, chains, rings, torches and other items — belonged to the resident, an officer who works at the United States consulate.
The investigation began after the police officer noticed the recurring disappearance of belongings from the residence. The domestic worker had provided services at the flat on three previous occasions and, according to the police force, enjoyed the victim's trust.
Security cameras reveal the manoeuvre
Suspicions intensified when the resident reviewed the footage from security cameras installed on the property. The images, obtained by TV Tribuna, an affiliate of Globo, show the woman obstructing and altering the position of the equipment before acting. Faced with the evidence, the officer called in a team from the 3rd Police District of Santos.
During the approach at the flat, the domestic worker denied any irregularity. The police officers, however, found the objects inside the handbag she was carrying. The victim themselves recognised all of the items on the spot.
Jewellery individually valued at up to R$ 100,000
According to the Civil Police, some of the pieces found were individually worth up to R$ 100,000. Just two of the recovered rings amounted to approximately R$ 150,000, according to the resident's account. The total of the seized objects exceeded R$ 200,000.
In addition to the jewellery, the officer had reported the disappearance of premium cuts of meat, perfumes, alcoholic beverages and hygiene products. The suspect's identity had not been officially disclosed as of the latest update to the report.
Admission and legal classification
During questioning, the woman admitted that she had intended to leave the flat with the objects that were in her handbag. She was charged with attempted qualified theft through breach of trust. The recovered goods were returned to the resident, and the investigation's mobile telephone was seized to support the investigation.
