DJ Dani Brasil arrested after dragging homeless man 400 metres in Santo Amaro

Daniel Santana de Jesus, known as DJ Dani Brasil, was charged by the Civil Police with homicide with eventual intent, disobedience, and drink driving, according to g1.globo.com. The incident occurred on Friday morning (9th) on Avenida Padre José Maria in Santo Amaro, South Zone of São Paulo, where the DJ hit and dragged Carlos Alberto Minotti, 57 years old, a homeless man, who did not survive his injuries.

Military police officers spotted a BMW driving in the wrong direction on Avenida Padre José Maria and ordered it to stop. The driver disobeyed and began a chase that went down Rua Engenheiro Francisco Pitta Brito, Rua Amador Bueno, Avenida Paulo Eiró — also in the wrong direction — the Marginal, and back to Avenida Padre José Maria. Other patrol cars were dispatched to reinforce the stop, but the chase continued.

During the pursuit, heading towards Largo Treze, the vehicle struck Carlos. Security cameras recorded the moment the victim became trapped to the car and was dragged. According to the Military Police, the distance travelled with Carlos under the vehicle was approximately 400 metres, until the Clube Joerg Bruder — also called Santo Amaro Sports Centre — whose gate was forced open by the BMW.

Driver found in club swimming pool

Unable to continue fleeing with the vehicle, Daniel abandoned the car and ran into the sports centre. Officers searched the location and found him inside a swimming pool. He was arrested and taken to the 11th Police District of Santo Amaro.

The breathalyser test recorded 0.71 milligrams of alcohol per litre of exhaled alveolar air — a level above the legal limit. "He was intoxicated. The breathalyser test was carried out, with a result of 0.71, well above what is permitted," said sergeant De Paula, of the Military Police. According to him, the suspect was not in a condition to make a statement and his right to remain silent was respected.

Companion witnessed the collision

One of the witnesses heard by the Civil Police was Carlos's companion, with whom he had lived for approximately two years. He was sleeping in a tent nearby when he heard the impact.

"I just heard the crash. I got scared. I looked. The car came, I tried to defend myself. I went to hide. Then suddenly, it went past. The car passed and went up. I got scared. When I saw, it was dragging my husband. His legs all sticking out. Then I started screaming, screaming... And he left, and I was screaming all the way to the Jorge Club. People running behind and I screaming," the companion told TV Globo, who asked not to be identified.

According to his account, Carlos had his head trapped to the vehicle during the dragging and was screaming for help, but the driver did not stop. "I want justice. Justice! Who is this guy? What DJ is this? Who took the person I love most. He's taking everything that is mine," said the witness. He also stated that he did not know the victim's relatives, although Carlos used to mention relatives in Jundiaí and Araraquara, in the interior of São Paulo.

Victim extracted from under car in serious condition

Ricardo Gomes, a club employee who arrived at work around 5:30 a.m., found military police officers and rescue teams already at the scene. According to him, Carlos was being removed from under the BMW with multiple visible injuries.

"Five minutes later, the man was still under the car. The rescue team came to get him out. He was badly hurt. Really bad. Horrible situation," said Ricardo. The paramedics performed resuscitation manoeuvres, used oxygen and applied other emergency procedures before transporting the victim.

Carlos was taken in serious condition to the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of Santo Amaro, but did not survive his injuries. The body was taken to the Legal Medical Institute (IML). A forensic examination was carried out, and the case was registered at the 11th Police District of Santo Amaro.

Daniel Santana de Jesus has approximately 130,000 followers on Instagram. The g1.globo.com report attempted to locate the defendant's legal representation to comment on the case, without success up until publication.
