Bricklayer and fence detained after jewellery theft in Jardins, São Paulo

The Civil Police arrested two suspects linked to the theft at a jewellery store on Rua Oscar Freire, in Jardins, West Zone of São Paulo, according to g1.globo.com. The detentions took place in the afternoon of Tuesday (13): a bricklayer hired to drill holes in the walls and a fence for stolen goods. Some of the jewels stolen, valued at approximately R$ 5 million, were recovered.

The two were taken to the 2nd Heritage Crimes Division of the State Department of Criminal Investigations (Deic). As there was no flagrante delicto, they were charged with aggravated theft and subsequently released.

How the crime was carried out

The theft took place between Sunday (11) and the early hours of Monday (12). The criminals entered around 7am on Sunday at a building under renovation on Rua Melo Alves and did not leave until 1:30am the following morning.

With the aid of an electric saw — later seized by police — the bricklayer drilled holes through the walls of two neighbouring clothing shops until the group reached the jewellery store. In addition to the jewels, the criminals took merchandise from the clothing stores they passed through.

To hinder identification, the suspects covered security cameras with aluminium foil and disabled the alarm systems. According to the statement of one of the shopkeepers to police, the group also consumed a bottle of sparkling wine found in the stock of one of the properties they broke into.

The crime was only discovered when the jewellery store manager arrived at the premises and found the shop ransacked.

Investigation continues with two fugitives

According to the authorities, at least three people participated in the theft. Police are continuing to search for the other two suspects who have not yet been identified.

The case remains under investigation by the Civil Police of São Paulo.
