Former Globocop pilot shot dead during robbery in Butantã, São Paulo

São Paulo's Civil Police is searching for the suspect responsible for the murder of Dato de Oliveira, former pilot of the Globocop — TV Globo's helicopter in São Paulo — during a robbery that occurred on Tuesday afternoon (19th) on Avenida do Rio Pequeno, at number 700, in the Butantã neighbourhood, West Zone of the capital.
According to cbn.globo.com, security camera footage obtained by TV Globo recorded the moment when the victim was travelling in the right lane with the car window open, when he was approached by a man on a motorcycle who announced the robbery.
Oliveira was hit by a close-range gunshot to the head. Witnesses stated that the robber intended to steal the victim's wedding ring. After the shot, the suspect fled. The victim was assisted and transported to University Hospital, but did not survive his injuries.
There is still no confirmation as to whether the pilot attempted to resist before being shot.
Dato de Oliveira had accumulated more than 40 years of experience in aviation. He had recently launched a book recounting his experiences in São Paulo's skies. In addition to his aviation career, he also worked as an actor in film productions, including the film VIPs, in which he appears piloting a helicopter alongside actor Wagner Moura.
The case was registered at the Butantã Police District. The authorities are analysing security camera footage collected in the area in order to identify and locate the suspect.
