Suspect in barber shop murder in Betim captured in São Paulo after eight years as fugitive

A 32-year-old man investigated for murder was arrested on the morning of Wednesday, 14 October, in the Campo Limpo neighbourhood in São Paulo, ending an eight-year flight from justice. According to mpmg.mp.br, the capture was the result of a joint operation between the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG), the Military Police of Minas Gerais (PMMG) and the Military Police of the State of São Paulo (PMESP).

The defendant, considered highly dangerous, had been a fugitive since 2018, when the courts issued a preventative arrest warrant against him. Military police officers approached him inside a vehicle and made an arrest based on the outstanding warrant. The man also has a record of illegal firearm possession.

The crime for which he is being tried occurred on 26 August 2016, inside a barber shop in the Dom Bosco neighbourhood in Betim, in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. According to the charges filed by the MPMG in March 2018, the defendant and an accomplice arrived at the location wearing balaclavas. One of them entered the establishment and fired eight shots at the victim, who was having a shave at the time of the attack and died on the spot.

The investigation concluded that the crime was motivated by a dispute over drug trafficking in the region. The victim, however, had no involvement with organised crime and was mistaken for a rival trafficker. Following the execution, the two fled in a car.

The accomplice was arrested in April 2018, one month after preventative arrest warrants were issued for both men. The defendant captured in São Paulo remained a fugitive for more than six years, being monitored by the Military Police Support Group (GAPM) and the Police Investigation and Proceedings Group (GIDP) of the MPMG from the year prior to the arrest.

The capture is the 32nd effected in 2026 by the Operational Support Centre for Public Safety Promotion Offices (CAO-SEP), a unit of the MPMG responsible for monitoring fugitives.
