Capture in Deodoro ends 18-year flight for kidnapping crime
Rio de Janeiro's Civil Police arrested a man investigated for extortion and kidnapping in Deodoro, a western zone neighbourhood of the capital, on Friday (18th), after being a fugitive for 18 years, as reported by cnnbrasil.com.br.
According to authorities, the suspect participated in the crime on 15 August 1997, in the Braz de Pina neighbourhood, northern Rio. The victim, a 63-year-old man, was held in captivity for three months.
The case is part of a series of extended kidnappings recorded in Rio de Janeiro between the 1990s and 2000s. According to investigations, the suspect acted in conjunction with three other individuals, all of whom have already been convicted by the courts. One of them was even arrested in the United States and subsequently deported to Brazil.
Because he was a fugitive, the legal proceedings against the man had been suspended since 2008. With his arrest, he will be made available to the courts to continue the legal process.
