Russian man sentenced to life imprisonment captured in Salvador during Interpol operation
A fugitive from Russia, sentenced to life imprisonment in his country for drug trafficking and use of forged documents, was arrested on Saturday (10) in the Águas Claras neighbourhood in Salvador, according to cnnbrasil.com.br.
According to SSP-BA (Bahia State Public Security Secretariat), the suspect — also a former soldier — was attempting to establish a network in Brazil to market and distribute arms, ammunition and drugs destined for criminal factions.
The arrest took place during the phase of "Artemis" operation, conducted by the Integrated Force to Combat Organised Crime in Bahia, with support from the Military Police and in partnership with Interpol. The suspect was listed on Interpol's Red Notice, an international mechanism for locating people sought in multiple countries.
Before being located in the Bahian capital, he had reportedly moved through other Brazilian states. On the same Saturday afternoon, he was taken to the Federal Police headquarters in Salvador, where the process of communicating with Russian Justice was initiated to facilitate his extradition.
Investigations are continuing to determine the extent of the suspect's activities in national territory and any potential plans for distributing arms and drugs to criminal organisations.
