Young woman shot during robbery in São Paulo's South Zone; origin of shot still under investigation
According to an investigation by g1.globo.com, Maria Eduarda Santana Nascimento, 24 years old, was killed by a gunshot on the morning of Thursday (1st) while driving her own vehicle along Estrada de Itapecerica, near Avenida Agostinho Rubim, in the South Zone of São Paulo. She was on her way to work when a robbery began.
The origin of the fatal bullet has not yet been determined. The Civil Police is investigating whether the shot that struck Maria Eduarda came from the weapon of the robber — identified as Pedro Paulo Bassetti, who was also shot and killed — or from the Civil Police detective who witnessed the approach and reacted. The Forensic Institute will produce expert reports to answer this question.
According to the police report, the detective stated that he had attempted to prevent the crime, which resulted in an exchange of gunfire. The case was registered as robbery followed by homicide resulting from police intervention.
Bassetti's weapon was handed over to the Civil Police by the officer himself. The detective gave a statement to the Civil Police Ombudsman's Office and was released afterwards.
Forensics examines mark on car's rear window
Among the elements to be examined is the mark from the shot on the rear window of the vehicle. Maria Eduarda was in the front seat, in the driver's position. The investigation also gathers security camera footage and witness statements to reconstruct the dynamics of what happened.
Family in mourning; wake held on Friday
Known to friends and relatives as "Duda", Maria Eduarda would have turned 25 the following Tuesday (6th) and was already planning her birthday party. Family members describe a young woman who enjoyed travelling and spending time with friends.
The young woman's father expressed his grief on social media after his daughter's death. "My daughter was on her way to work and, unfortunately, she encountered this I don't know what unprepared person who thought he was in a western film", he wrote.
The family, distressed, chose not to grant interviews at this time. Maria Eduarda's wake and funeral are scheduled for Friday afternoon (2nd), at a cemetery in Itapecerica da Serra, a region near São Paulo's South Zone.
