Eight arrested after shooting attack on PT leader in Tailândia (PA)
Civil Police arrested eight suspects and seized 14 weapons following an attempted murder against the president of the municipal PT in Tailândia, Pará.
Operation arrests eight suspects in attempted murder of Workers' Party official in north-eastern Pará
Civil Police arrested eight men suspected of involvement in an attempted murder against Antônio Moreira, known as Tonzinho do PT, president of the municipal directorate of the Workers' Party in Tailândia, north-eastern Pará. According to g1.globo.com, the arrests occurred on Friday (25th) in the cities of Tailândia and Moju, and at least 14 weapons were seized.
The attack took place on Monday (21st). Surveillance camera footage recorded two suspects arriving on a motorcycle. One of them got down, walked out of the cameras' field of vision, and moments later, shots were heard. The man returned to the motorcycle and the two fled.
Land dispute as motivation
Investigations indicate that the crime originated from a land dispute related to georeferencing work and the opening of property boundaries for a rural property in the rural zone of Moju. Twelve days before the attack, Moreira's team had been blocked and threatened with death by armed men linked to the adjoining area. On that occasion, the suspects photographed Antônio Moreira and an assistant and fired shots at the tractor being used for the work.
Civil Police did not inform what the specific participation of each of the investigated individuals was in the attempted murder.
Operation coordinated by multiple police stations
The police operation was coordinated by Tailândia Police Station, Tucuruí Homicide Police Station, and the Regional Superintendence of Tucuruí Lake, with support from other Civil Police units and the Deputy Secretary of Intelligence and Criminal Analysis (Siac).
In a statement released after the attack, PT Pará expressed solidarity with the victim and reported that it is following the case. Antônio Moreira had contested a councillor seat in Tailândia in the 2024 municipal elections and is not a candidate for any elective office in the 2026 General Elections.
