According to g1.globo.com, an off-duty police officer shot his father-in-law dead during a family argument in Jardim Bela Vista, in Guarulhos, in the greater São Paulo area. The victim, Fábio de Lima, 45 years old, was found dead in the garage of the residence where the relatives were gathered.
The disagreement is said to have begun when Fábio parked his motorcycle in front of the property's garage, blocking access. The police officer, identified as Mateus Aureliano da Silva, 27 years old, told officers at the police station that his father-in-law had attempted to take his gun during the argument, and that the shots were fired in self-defence.
Witnesses present contradicted this account. According to TV Globo's reporting, they stated that Mateus shot Fábio de Lima at close range, without the victim having attempted to take the gun.
The police officer himself was also injured and was taken to an emergency room. The arrest warrant, initially issued, was converted to preventive detention. The case was referred to the 7th Police District of Guarulhos.
The defence of Mateus Aureliano da Silva was contacted, but did not comment at the time of publication of the report.
