Curitiba school kidnapping ends with rescue of 13 minors
Brazilian police rescued 13 children on Friday who were being held hostage at the São Braz Municipal Centre for Infant Education in the São Braz neighbourhood of Curitiba, southern Brazil, according to infobae.com citing local authorities.
The abductor, whose identity was not disclosed, was shot dead by officers, confirmed police spokeswoman Lieutenant Letícia Donatello, speaking to journalists gathered outside the educational centre.
The man, armed with a knife, held the children hostage for approximately three hours. Moments before the shooting, Donatello had stated that authorities were still negotiating with the abductor.
Police cordoned off the area and mobilised special operations battalion personnel along with specialised negotiators, according to an official statement. The Municipal Education Secretariat indicated for its part that it had monitored the situation from the start and sent officials to assist the children and their families.
The state of Paraná, whose capital is Curitiba, has recorded other episodes of school violence in recent years. In 2023, an armed man entered a school in the city of Cambé and two students died in the subsequent shooting.
