Police kills hostage-taker and rescues 13 children at daycare in Brazil

Police in Curitiba, Brazil, rescued 13 children who were being held hostage at a public daycare and shot the attacker, who threatened to set fire to the classroom. The information was disclosed by local police.

At least one child was injured during the hostage situation. The man was armed with a knife.

"The suspect threatened to pour petrol over himself and over other people. Our negotiators were at the scene, but did not see any alternative other than to neutralise him," said Leticia Martins, spokeswoman for the Paraná state police.

According to Martins, the attacker arrived by bicycle, jumped over the fence of the municipal early-childhood education facility and barricaded himself in a room with the 13 children.

Police identified the man as suffering from schizophrenia, but did not reveal his identity or details about how he was shot.

Curitiba city hall stated that the children and daycare staff would receive crisis psychological support following the incident.
