Jorlan Lopes da Silva, aged 33, was arrested on Tuesday (15) by Paraíba Civil Police wearing women's clothing and accompanied by an infant — a strategy used to hinder his identification, according to the officers. As reported by cnnbrasil.com.br, he confessed to 11 homicides during questioning and is identified by authorities as a member of a criminal organisation described as extremely violent.
Delegate Douglas Garcia stated that the suspect declared during questioning that his first crime occurred when he was 13 years old and that he would have committed 80 murders while still a minor. Garcia added that Jorlan confessed to the crimes "very coldly".
The investigation indicates that the man is responsible for various homicides registered in the Mamanguape Valley, in the inland region of Paraíba. Among the cases attributed to him is a double homicide that occurred on 1 August, "in broad daylight", in the Umbá neighbourhood, in the city of Riutino.
According to the authorities, the suspect justified the crimes with the "feeling of taking justice into his own hands", claiming that the victims threatened him and were "involved in the world of crime".
The arrest was the result of an integrated operation that brought together civil police, military police and intelligence agents. Following the activation of the Military Police command, a task force was constituted that enabled the sharing of information and the definition of strategy to locate the fugitive. The police siege lasted more than 30 hours until the arrest was effected.
