Course of events: assault rifle and targeted fire into the crowd
According to police, the 43-year-old drove his car near the scene of the crime and then continued on foot. On the grounds of the racecourse in Schachen, he opened fire with an assault rifle — an AK-74, a Kalashnikov-type weapon — and changed his direction of fire several times. He also fired shots at a passing car; its occupants remained unharmed.
During the attack in the night of Sunday, 30 August, at around 2.30 a.m., a 22-year-old woman from Italy was fatally hit. Five further people were injured by through-and-through shots, and one further person by a ricochet. Two of the six injured remain in clinical care.
Arrest following witness tip
A witness provided a description of the fleeing vehicle. In cooperation with the Jura Cantonal Police, over 100 matching vehicles were examined. One of them was spotted in Aarau at the time of the crime as it left the scene.
The suspect eventually turned himself in to the Jura Cantonal Police, which subsequently informed the Aargau Cantonal Police — approximately one day after the crime. Three firearms were secured in the man's vehicle: two pistols and the assault rifle AK-74.
