Swiss police are classifying the attack on a techno rave in the canton of Aargau as a shooting spree, according to n-tv. In the night leading into Sunday, a 43-year-old Swiss man fired around 40 shots at random into the crowd at an event on the premises of the Aargau Racing Association, using an assault rifle. At another location he also fired shots using a handgun.
A 22-year-old Italian woman died as a result of the shots. Five further individuals aged between 24 and 31 were wounded by gunfire; a sixth person came forward later with an injury caused by a ricochet. Among the injured is a 24-year-old German woman who lives in Switzerland. She told the newspaper "Blick" of two grazing wounds.
The event venue had hosted a techno music event since Saturday, with organisers expecting around 3,500 visitors. The rave was practically over at the time of the incident, but more than 100 people remained on the premises. The perpetrator had arrived by car. Investigators later secured a Kalashnikov and two handguns from his vehicle.
Nearly 24 hours after the incident, the man surrendered to authorities in the night leading into Monday. He has been in investigative custody since then. Police had previously launched a major manhunt, in which German authorities also participated – the scene of the crime is located approximately 25 kilometres south of Bad Säckingen in Baden-Württemberg.
"He had no accomplices or co-perpetrators," explained prosecutor Christoph Rüedi. According to initial findings, the arrested man suffers from a mental illness; however, a concrete motive remains unclear. No prior convictions are known. The man had worked as an army cook and left the military in 2013.
Proceedings have been initiated against him for wilful killing, murder, multiple endangerment of life, and violation of weapons legislation.
