Armed attack at a rave in Aarau: 22-year-old Italian woman killed, five injured
An unknown man or several unknown individuals opened fire at a rave on the racecourse in Aarau, killing a young Italian woman. The perpetrator or perpetrators remain at large, with the investigation continuing at international level.
Aarau rave shooting perpetrator still at large
Swiss police have been searching since Monday for the perpetrator or perpetrators of gunfire that killed a 22-year-old Italian woman and injured five people in the night of Saturday to Sunday during a rave on the racecourse in Aarau, canton Aargau, according to News.ro citing AFP.
Gunfire was heard at around 02:30 (00:30 GMT), when the party was drawing to a close. "Visitors were preparing to return home when one or more unknown individuals fired multiple gunshots at a group of people," the cantonal police stated in a statement.
The young Italian woman died at the scene. "She died despite resuscitation attempts," the police said, adding that five people were injured — a German female citizen and four Swiss men, aged between 24 and 31. "They were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious," the cantonal police added.
Investigation at international level, three hypotheses being investigated
A police spokesperson stated that the exact location of the search cannot be revealed for investigative reasons, noting that "ongoing investigations are continuing". The cantonal police confirmed that "several authorities from across Switzerland and neighbouring countries are participating in the investigation".
Investigators do not yet know the number and identity of the suspects, nor the motive for the attack. On Sunday, the commander of the Aargau cantonal police, Michael Leupold, reported that at the scene "traces of two different calibres were found, from a pistol or sub-machine gun and from an assault rifle".
Leupold mentioned three investigative avenues: a terrorist attack, a massacre, and a criminal act with an as yet unknown motive — "a revenge within a group or something entirely different". "We cannot favour any of them for the time being," he added.
Discrepancies regarding the nationality of the injured
On Sunday, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni indicated that two Italian citizens were among the injured. Swiss police corrected this information on Monday, clarifying that the injured are one German female citizen and four Swiss men.
Authorities asked again on Monday "anyone who has video images of the event to make them available".
On Sunday evening, the President of the Swiss Confederation, Guy Parmelin, expressed condolences on network X to the family of the Italian victim, referring to "tragic events" that had "deeply affected" him.
