Fire deaths in Thusis identified – Detainee held in custody on manslaughter charge
Following the major fire at the Beverin restaurant in Thusis, Graubünden, all four victims have been identified. A detainee is being held in investigative custody.
Four dead after fire in Thusis – suspect in investigative custody
The four victims of the devastating fire at the Beverin restaurant in Thusis, Graubünden, have been identified. According to 20 Minuten, citing Graubünden public prosecutors and broadcaster RSI, the victims are a 32-year-old Portuguese woman, a 35-year-old and a 44-year-old Romanian, and a 57-year-old Bulgarian.
In connection with the fire, one person is being held in investigative custody. The person is under investigation on suspicion of multiple cases of negligent manslaughter and multiple cases of negligent bodily harm.
The multi-storey building containing flats and a restaurant burned out completely overnight on Friday. According to police, the fire broke out on the second floor; the stairwell collapsed, whereupon the roof had to be opened with a crane. Nearly one hundred emergency personnel from the fire services of Thusis, Cazis, Oberer Heinzenberg, Ems Chemie and Albula were deployed.
On Saturday, rescue crews initially recovered two bodies and continued to search the building for missing persons despite the partially collapsed structure. Eight additional people were injured, two of them seriously. Fourteen people managed to reach safety despite the collapsed stairwell.
