Trial in Bülach following fatal bus accident at Zurich Airport
According to swissinfo.ch, a German female driver is facing Bülach District Court after a traffic accident on 16 February 2024 resulted in the death of a 90-year-old bus passenger. The accident occurred directly in front of the Circle at Zurich Airport.
The accused intended to drive her Toyota from a petrol station onto Flughafenstrasse. In doing so, she failed to notice an approaching scheduled bus that was travelling towards the airport. The bus driver attempted to swerve and brake – without success. The vehicle collided with the German woman's car.
As a result of the impact, the 90-year-old woman inside the bus was thrown from her seat. She slid under a row of seats and struck the front left wheel arch with her head without anything breaking her fall. Severely injured, she lay motionless. One day after the accident she died in Zurich University Hospital. The remaining passengers and the bus driver remained uninjured.
According to the indictment, a glance to the left would have been sufficient to prevent the fatal accident. The public prosecutor therefore demands a conviction for negligent death and negligent serious violation of traffic regulations. As punishment, it is requesting an eight-month suspended prison sentence with a probationary period of two years and a fine of 1,500 francs. The date when Bülach District Court will announce its verdict is not yet known.
