Flight from police control at Hulftegg: Two arrests following manhunt

As reported by Google News CH — Crime (de), on Saturday evening (22 August 2026) a car on Hulfteggstrasse ignored a police patrol's stop signal and fled in the direction of Tösstal. Shortly after 17:00, third parties alerted the emergency and operations control centre in St. Gallen: a vehicle was overtaking dangerously and cutting off other cars.
Immediately after the report, St. Gallen Cantonal Police and Zurich Cantonal Police jointly launched a manhunt. The parked car was found shortly afterwards. The two occupants — a 40-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man — were outside the vehicle.
Both are suspected of driving the car alternately while unfit to drive. There is an additional suspicion against the man of driving despite having had his driving licence withdrawn.
Whilst the woman complied with police instructions, the 45-year-old approached the deployed police officers in a threatening manner. A stabilisation device was then deployed. The man continued to resist during his arrest, was slightly injured in the process and subsequently received medical care. He also behaved uncooperatively at the hospital.
Both persons were arrested and the vehicle was seized. Several patrols from St. Gallen Cantonal Police, one patrol from Zurich Cantonal Police, an ambulance and a police physician were deployed.
