'Ndrangheta trial in Bellinzona: alleged Swiss representative before federal criminal court

As Google News CH — Crime (de) reports, the trial began on Monday at the Federal Criminal Court in Bellinzona against a man alleged to have represented Calabrian organised crime in Switzerland.
At the start of the trial, the defence counsel for the accused immediately denied any association with a criminal organisation. There was no evidence that his client was a member of the 'Ndrangheta, he declared in court. The years-long surveillance of his client he described as a "disproportionate deployment" of resources.
The federal prosecutor countered sharply: the accused had shown complete indifference during the investigation proceedings — a "perfetto stile mafioso", a "perfect Mafia style". In addition, he accused the defence of having already delivered a closing statement, which he described as "inappropriate". The court would have to rule on the individual points at the end of the proceedings.
The accused faces charges including participation in or support for a criminal organisation.
The Federal Criminal Court has scheduled the trial until 9 September; 10 and 11 September are provided as reserve dates.
