Swiss police are continuing a major operation to search for an attacker who killed a 22-year-old woman and wounded five other people in Aarau, according to 24sata. The incident occurred shortly after the end of a rave event to which the organiser expected around 3,500 visitors.
When the first reports from citizens arrived, police officers quickly came to the scene and found more than 100 people still in the space. They found the 22-year-old woman with gunshot wounds; despite attempts to provide aid, she died. The five wounded people are not in a life-threatening condition according to the latest information.
Cartridge cases of various calibres were found at the scene — including 9-millimetre ammunition used in pistols, as well as ammunition that could correspond to long-barrelled weapons. The police do not yet know how many attackers were involved or who they are.
Michael Leupold, commander of Aargau cantonal police, confirmed that the operation is continuing.
"Until the perpetrator is identified and arrested, we are still in the danger prevention phase," Leupold said.
Investigators are currently considering three possible motives: a terrorist attack, an individual attack, or a crime linked to criminal circles. Dieter Egli from the cantonal government emphasised that it is not yet known who was behind the attack or what the motive was.
Police believe the victims were most likely randomly selected, as no mutual connections have been established among the wounded so far.
The area around Aargau Rennvereins remains cordoned off. Police are calling on citizens to avoid it so that investigators can carry out the inspection and gather evidence unimpeded.
