The incident occurred at a hippodrome, where the "Aarauer Rave" event was taking place. Police spokeswoman Vanessa Rumpold stated that "several shots were fired into a large crowd of people". Swiss newspaper "Blick" reports that the shots rang out before 3 a.m.
Approximately 3,500 people attended the party. The event began on Saturday at 3 p.m. and was scheduled to end at 2 a.m. on Sunday. Witnesses told "Blick" that shots were heard around 2.30 a.m., while the music event was still ongoing, and many participants took shelter in a nearby sports hall. Initially, people thought they were fireworks.
One witness said he heard "bursts of gunfire". A local resident posted a video on social media in which several shots can be heard in the background and the street is empty.
Large-scale police forces were deployed to the scene – officers confirmed this on the platform "X". An AFP journalist saw armed officers on the motorway as far as 30 kilometres away from the shooting site. A military helicopter was also stationed in the capital of Argau canton, along with numerous rescue and medical personnel.
"A search is currently underway for the perpetrators, whose identities are currently unknown," police announced on the platform "X". According to officers, the motive for the shooting and the exact circumstances are still unknown.
