The incident occurred at a racecourse, where the annual techno music event "Aarauer Rave" was being held. Swiss newspaper "Blick" reports that shots were fired at around 3 a.m., while the event was still taking place. The party, which began on Saturday at 3 p.m., was scheduled to end at 2 a.m. on Sunday, and was attended by approximately 3,500 people.
Police spokesperson Vanessa Rumpold told "Blick" that "several shots were fired in a large crowd of people". Witnesses reported that shots rang out around 2.30 a.m. – many party attendees initially thought it was fireworks. Later, people took shelter in a nearby sports hall. One witness said they heard "series of shots".
Large-scale police forces were deployed to the scene, along with rescue personnel and medical staff. A military helicopter was stationed in Argau canton's capital. An AFP journalist saw armed officers on the highway up to 30 kilometres away from the shooting site.
"A search is currently underway for the perpetrators, whose identities are currently unknown," police posted on the platform "X". According to official authorities, the motives for the shooting and the precise circumstances have not yet been established.
