Shooting attack at Aarau racecourse claims one life

Multiple shots were fired at a rave in the Swiss canton of Aargau in the night leading into Sunday. According to n-tv, a 22-year-old woman was killed. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene, as the Aargau cantonal police announced via the social media service X. Four men and one woman, aged between 24 and 27 years, were injured with light to severe wounds. According to police, all victims are from Switzerland.

The incident occurred at the Aarau Rave on the racecourse, a techno event attended by around 3,500 people, which ran from Saturday afternoon into the early hours of Sunday. Eyewitnesses reported that they initially mistook the shots for fireworks. Videos allegedly show "rapid gunfire".

The cantonal police initially confirmed "multiple shots fired at a large group of people" in the morning and declared a "special situation". At a press conference in the early afternoon, a spokesman for the Aargau cantonal police explained that the search was in full swing. Evidence collection and preservation were underway to obtain information as quickly as possible.

Initially, there was no confirmed information about the perpetrator or any possible motive. "There is no knowledge of where the perpetrator could be located," the spokesman said. At the same time, police ruled out that those responsible posed an acute danger. It was to be assumed that a "larger number" of shots had been fired.

The area around the racecourse is cordoned off over a wide perimeter. Fire and police services are on site, and person checks are being carried out at diversions around the cordoned-off area. The public was urged to avoid the area. The Aargau cantonal police also asked for video and image material to be sent to their Instagram channel. Aarau is located approximately 40 kilometres west of Zurich.

The DJ of the affected event, DJ Tekibo, has since spoken out via an Instagram story. What had happened at the rave was "absolutely heartbreaking". "Techno and raves should be a place of freedom and safety," he wrote. He had lost an important person and could not find the right words. He announced that he would withdraw for some time.
