The suspected shooter who killed a woman and wounded six other people in Aarau over the weekend has turned himself in to authorities in Delémont. According to SRF, the Aargau cantonal police had already been pursuing the man intensively – a massive manhunt involving officers from several police forces is believed to have prompted his surrender.
According to the current state of the investigation, the suspect fired more than 40 times at a crowd gathered at a techno party. One woman was killed and six further people were wounded. The motive remains unclear so far. The man exercised his right to remain silent.
Police suspect that the perpetrator suffers from a mental illness. Prosecutor Christoph Rüedi stated at the press conference: "We have indications that the perpetrator was psychologically disturbed. However, we have no documentation of this; we must request it properly in the criminal proceedings."
Notably, the man possessed a substantial weapons arsenal: he had two pistols and a Kalashnikov. Police explained that he had acquired the weapons around 20 years ago. Under current firearms law, such purchases would no longer be possible today. The case thus raises questions about so-called "grandfathering" provisions in Swiss firearms law.
At the press conference, the response time of the emergency services was also discussed. A journalist pointed to witness statements indicating that it took up to half an hour before the crime scene was secured. Police representative Schildknecht disagreed: police had arrived "within minutes".
The Aargau cantonal police concluded the press conference after answering questions. The investigation is ongoing.
