Police confirmed that a 22-year-old woman succumbed to her injuries at the scene. In the shooting, four men and one woman, aged between 24 and 27, were also injured and taken to hospital — some of them in critical condition. All victims are permanently resident in Switzerland.
The incident took place at a traditional electronic music event that began on Saturday at 3 p.m. and lasted into the early hours of Sunday. The shooting occurred just before the end of the event. Police spokesperson Vanessa Rumpold explained to Swiss newspaper Blick: "Multiple shots were fired into a larger group of people."
One witness told Swiss media that many initially mistook the bangs for firecrackers or fireworks. Only when someone shouted for everyone to hide did visitors seek shelter behind the bar, under the DJ booth and in other parts of the venue. Following the incident, attendees were taken to a nearby gymnasium for safety reasons.
Authorities deployed large police forces to the shooting scene and surrounding area as a precaution. A journalist from French news agency AFP observed armed police officers on the motorway as well, 30 kilometres from the site of the tragedy. Police officers secured the Schachen racecourse and nearby streets in the town centre.
The perpetrator or perpetrators remain at large. Police currently have no information about the motives or circumstances of the attack. The investigation is continuing, and authorities have called on attendees to provide photographs and video footage that could help clarify what happened.
