Escape from police check ends with helicopter rescue in ravine

A 34-year-old Bulgarian fled from a traffic check by the St. Gallen cantonal police on Rickenstrasse in St. Gallenkappel on Tuesday afternoon, according to 20 Minuten. The man ignored the stop signal and drove at excessive speed in the direction of Eschenbach.

At the junction of Rickenstrasse and Aatalstrasse, he stopped the vehicle and fled on foot into the Neuhüsler Tobel. In the steep terrain, a police officer located him and arrested him.

Due to the inaccessible terrain, the Alpine deployment unit of the cantonal police and the Rega with a rescue specialist from Alpine Rescue East Switzerland were deployed for the recovery of both persons. The Eschenbach fire department provided additional support.

The arrested man was driving without a valid licence and was unfit to drive according to police. He was also carrying narcotics. Whether he is responsible for further offences is currently being clarified. The St. Gallen cantonal police continue investigations under the direction of the public prosecutor's office of the canton of St. Gallen.
