Ramona Ester Durán Mella, aged 91, was found dead in her home in Pitrufquén by her grandson Sebastián, who came to visit her and discovered her death. Inside the property, belongings and furniture were found strewn about. The person or persons responsible apparently searched each of the rooms in an apparent search for cash that the woman had received from a recent sale of animals. When they did not find that money, they took her pension.
In addition to theft and assault, the authorities are investigating the alleged crime of rape.
Sebastián, the victim's grandson, described his emotional state upon discovering the crime scene: "I feel a lot of rage and helplessness at how they caused so much harm to such a humble person, such a weak person because she was very fragile. At her age she was not able to defend herself; she was a very kind person, she had no problems with anyone."
The young man also described his grandmother as a woman of generous character: "She was a very kind woman to everyone, people always came to ask her for favours and she did them," he said in an interview with T13.
Johanna, another family member of the victim, expressed the family's pain: "As a family we are very affected... sadness, pain, rage, helplessness that they did harm to such a fragile person. That they find whoever is responsible and that justice is done."
A nephew of Ramona Durán added: "She was an old lady and she did no harm to anyone; on the contrary, she helped, so what they did was evil."
The investigation is ongoing, with no arrests reported at this time.
