Smuggling at the border: 384 boxes of veterinary pharmaceuticals hidden under the chassis
An Argentine truck driver was detained at the Los Libertadores border complex after Chilean Customs discovered a clandestine shipment of injectable veterinary medications hidden in the spare wheel of his vehicle, mendovoz.com reported.
The operation began when Customs specialists detected anomalous forms under the truck's chassis while analysing scanner images. Upon removing the tyre, inspectors found 384 boxes of stimulants and diuretics valued at more than 9,000 dollars.
The driver stated that the products had arrived by parcel from Buenos Aires to Mendoza, where he concealed them at a tyre repair shop. He also provided the name of the recipient in Santiago.
By order of the Public Ministry, the driver was placed at the disposal of the Guarantee Court of Los Andes, where prosecutor Rodolfo Robles Mora formalised charges against him for the crime of smuggling.
During the hearing, the prosecutor and the National Customs Service offered him a reparatory agreement: to pay in instalments double the value of the merchandise, an amount exceeding 16 million pesos. The transporter accepted the terms, and the judicial case was suspended conditionally upon full payment of the agreed sum.
The court also ordered the immediate confiscation and destruction of all seized pharmaceuticals, a task entrusted to the Agricultural and Livestock Service.
