Second sergeant of Carabineros fatally shot during domestic violence procedure in Quilleco

Second sergeant Jaime Ariel Urrea Burgos was killed by a shotgun blast to the neck on Sunday night whilst responding to a call regarding domestic violence on Barros Arana street in Quilleco, in the Biobío region. The person who fired the shot was immediately detained by Urrea's colleagues and the PDI took charge of the investigation, according to biobiochile.cl.

The incident occurred minutes before 23:20 hours. Urrea Burgos attended the address with a group of colleagues following an initial emergency call, in which the victim reportedly did not file a formal complaint and Carabineros filed an official complaint. When the officers had concluded that initial procedure, a second call arrived and they returned to the same residence.

Upon entering a room in the property, Urrea was the first to go in and encountered the aggressor, who was carrying a shotgun. The man fired at the officer, striking him in the neck.

Urrea was rushed to the Cesfam clinic in Quilleco, located just metres from the scene, but did not survive due to the severity of the wound.

The chief prosecutor of the Los Ángeles Public Prosecutor's Office, Carlos Díaz, confirmed the facts: "The defendant, making use of a shotgun-type firearm, fired against one of the officers, injuring him and causing his death. The person responsible for the shots is detained in Carabineros custody."

The prefect Juan Orellana Campos, head of the Biobío provincial prefecture, stated that "we have our specialist teams, including the Los Ángeles Homicide Brigade with support from the Criminal Laboratory, to determine the sequence of events and present them to the Public Prosecutor for the respective formalisation proceedings."

Through an institutional statement, Carabineros "strongly condemns this new act of violence and expresses its deepest condolences to the family, loved ones and fellow officers of our new institutional martyr," whilst reaffirming its commitment to supporting the family of the fallen officer.

Urrea Burgos had 18 years of service and belonged to the Canteras Station, dependent on the 1st Police Station in Los Ángeles. His death occurred exactly one week after the homicide of senior non-commissioned officer Cristopher Aguilera, who was killed in Lo Espejo.
